Preparing Your Boat for a Survey

A Step-by-Step Guide to Ensure a Smooth Inspection

Whether you’re buying, selling, or insuring your vessel, a professional marine survey is a critical part of the process. Proper preparation can save time, avoid complications, and even help secure a better outcome.

Below is a simple guide to help you get your boat survey-ready.

1. Clean and Declutter

  • Remove excess gear and personal items
  • Empty storage compartments and lockers
  • Clean decks, bilges, and living areas
  • Ensure all hatches, panels, and lockers are accessible
  • Pump out holding and gray water tanks

Tip: Surveyors need to access everything. If they can’t see it, they can’t inspect it.

2. Make Sure Systems Are Operational

  • Start the engine and check for any warning lights or odd noises
  • Test bilge pumps, lights, electronics, plumbing, and steering
  • Top off fuel, water, and battery charge (if applicable)

Note: If a system isn’t working, the surveyor will flag it—and that may affect valuation or insurance.

3. Have Documentation Ready

  • Registration and title documents
  • Maintenance logs and repair receipts
  • Insurance and prior survey reports (if available)
  • Equipment lists or manuals

4. Safety Gear Checklist

  • Life jackets, flares, fire extinguishers, sound devices
  • First aid kits, throwable devices, emergency signaling
  • Navigation lights in working order
  • Bilge, Fire, and CO alarms are functional
  • All required USCG placards and documents are in place (see links page)

5. Coordinate Haul-Out (If Needed)

  • Schedule a lift at a local marina or boatyard
  • Ensure you’re there or arrange for someone to assist
  • Clean the bottom if it’s heavily fouled before the lift

6. Be Onboard (If Possible)

  • Answer questions on maintenance and history
  • Observe the process and learn about your boat
  • Discuss any issues the surveyor identifies
